l have an 1989 240 series, 5spd with a cracked engine block. l am wondering what other model engines are compatable that l could possibly install - something perferabley with a bit more power.

l have a great running low mile 2.3 out of a 1991 244. If you are in the north east l will cut you a great deal.

The 2.1 OHC engine was the forerunner of the 2.3 & completely interchangeable, with the same lack of power. An interesting swap would be an older OHV engine, B18 or B20, which can be hotrodded to pieces. You'd have to get the particulars on gearbox mating, engine mounts & such from elsewhere but l know the swap can be done. You can carb them or get a later B20 with D-jet FI. l used to work with a guy who put these little pushrod engines in 240s formerly equipped with Diesels. They ran great & lasted forever. Just an idea.

while they r kind of rare the double overhead cam 16v. engine with balance shafts[from a 9 series] will bolt up. u will have to modify the engine wiring harness[sensors r in different locations], blank off the rear of cylinder head distributor & use the intermediate shaft & distributor from ur old engine [no firewall clearance for stock placement of distributor on this engine].[no distributor drive teeth r on the intermediate shaft of this engine] of course the head pipe will have to be modified & fuel supply & return lines will have to be lengthened, & a suitable inlet hose from throttle body to air mass unit made.
note: if u go this route get the engine with the accessorie drive brackets & mounts [your componants will fit but with the balance shaft belt, the brackets/mounts off of the old engine will put ur alternator ,a/c compressor andp/s pump at the wrong pully spacing [new hoses & wiring changes for these also]

Yo will be looking for a B230F motor out of a 740 or 240. Depending on emissions in yur state, you cannot legally put an older motor in a newer vehicle, but '86 -90 should work. If you want more power, get a B230FT from a 740 turbo (make sure you get the ECU and wiring) look for a car that had turbo plus added.
