l have a 1987 Volvo 740 .The transmission will not shift to 3rd or 4th until it warms up ( about a mile of driving ) . It doesnt have an electic or vacuum module and l am completely new to Volvo is . Could it be the type of fluid ? Vacuum problem ?

get the trans flushed and new fluid put in it may also be the pnp switch check the links out one is to a shop that u can get all the parts u need

The throttle kick down cable is a common problem on these models, and can cause this problem, but check the fluid level first, low fluid will also cause this. If the fluid level and the cable are OK, then you are probably looking at a rebuilt/new transmission.
